Three Things To Know About Bigfoot Sightings

Have you seen Bigfoot?

Probably not in real life, but chances are you've seen this critter’s visage and figure on a poster or a mug or a keychain, or some type of strange little item as you go about your travels.

Or maybe on a T-shirt…?

Here are three things to know about this big folklore phenomenon that looms large in the American mind, and in other places around the world, too. Bigfoot is a big deal, and knowing more about the history of this trope helps you to understand why.

Bigfoot – An Old-School Paranormal Story

One of the first things to understand about the Bigfoot myth is that it's one of the originals. Along with the Loch Ness monster and other creepy crawlies popularized in folklore around American wilderness, these monsters were big before the zombie invasions of this generation, or the types of creepypasta characters brought alive by millennials and their descendents. There’s a cultural history around Bigfoot sightings that make this an enduring part of Americana in the genre of the “tall tale” – as Mark Twain might say.

A Sense of Place

Here's another thing to know about Bigfoot – Bigfoot sightings are often tied to particular areas of the U.S.

For example, go up to northern Maine, and you'll see Bigfoot plastered all over everything. Those craggy mountains are a prime spot for Bigfoot to hang out. You just might see him/her/it on a hike, but don't get too close.

By Any Other Name

If you are going to be a Bigfoot hunter, you should also know that the shaggy monster also goes by other names from time to time, and an alias for this monster is not by any means out of the question. One of these alternate titles is the Sasquatch. Another is the Yeti, which has now spawned its own line of coolers and other camping gear. The Yeti, along with its cousin the Abominable Snowman, has often been cited in other parts of the world, for instance, near the South Pole.
