Just like many of the state flags in the U.S, Pennsylvania's official state flag consists of the state’s coat of arms. The main color of the flag is blue and the state motto is displayed on a ribbon at the base of the design. The coat of arms has a lot of symbolism that each of them has its own meaning. The ship on the flag symbolizes the state’s commerce going around the world. The plow, on the other hand, symbolizes the natural resources of the state. And the three sheaves of wheat represent the fields of Pennsylvania.
Did you know that the state coat of arms of Pennsylvania was first adopted in 1778? In fact, the flag wasn’t authorized by the state until 1799. Since then, the design has changed over the years and the final design that you see now was put in 1907. And in 2005, a bill was passed by the state legislature to add “Pennsylvania” at the bottom of the flag.
