The official state flag of Missouri is composed of three equal horizontal triband of red, white, and blue stripes, following the arms of Missouri in the center. This was designed by Mary Elizabeth Oliver and the colors represent different meanings. The red and white stripes represent valor and purity; the blue represents permanency, vigilance, and justice of the state.
But did you know that for almost a century after achieving statehood, Missouri did not have an official flag? The concept for an official flag first came in in 1908, when the Daughters of the American Revolution established a committee that would look into the design of a state flag. The committee was headed by the wife of Senator Robert Burett Oliver, Mrs. Marie Elizabeth Oliver together with a resident of Cape Girardeau. Eventually, Mrs. Oliver designed the flag and it was introduced to the Missouri Senate on March 17, 1909. However, it was not the only design that was being considered by the General Assembly. The second design of a flag was introduced by Dr. N.R. Holcomb was opposed by many due to its close resemblance to the U.S. flag.
