The official Cambodian flag features an illustration of Angkor Wat in the center, which is considered the largest monument in the world. Before 1863, the official flag of the Kingdom of Cambodia was a yellow triangular pennant with a thick green border. Also in the same year, the Kingdom of Cambodia was a colony under France. The flag of Cambodia remained the same but the French tricolor flag was introduced and waved to represent the union.
However, in March 1941, the Japanese occupied Cambodia and adopted a new version of the flag that featured a red field with an outline of a square with smaller white squares in the center and each corner. But when the Japanese surrendered in 1945, the flag was reverted to that of the French Protectorate. And when Cambodia finally gained its independence from France in 1953, a new flag was adopted but it’s very similar to the previous one adopted. This time, the Cambodian flag features the white Angkor Wat on a red background with a blue band on the top and bottom.
