The official flag of Australia is patterned on the British maritime Blue Ensign that consists of a blue field with the UK flag in the upper hoist quarter with a large white seven-pointed star that represents the Commonwealth Star.
The Australian National Flag was first waved in 1901 and since then, it became Australia’s national symbol and an expression of Australian identity and pride. But did you know that it was Australia’s first Prime Minister, Rt Hon Sir Edmund Barton who initiated a competition to design a flag for the new Commonwealth of Australia? There were about 32,000 entries that were submitted and five of the nearly-identical entries were awarded.
It was in 1903 when King Edward VII approved two designs for the official flag of Australia: the Commonwealth blue and red ensign (for the merchant Navy). Both of the ensigns were simplified to four seven-pointed stars and one five-pointed star. In 1998, an amendment was passed to the Flags Act of 1953 to make sure that the Australian National Flag can be changed only with the approval of the Australian people.
