“My dear friend Hamilton, whom I shot!” The Burr-Hamilton duel is one of the well-known personal conflicts in American history. The tension between the two started with Hamilton’s journalistic defamation of Burr’s gubernatorial race in which the latter was a candidate. Hamilton often spoke ill of Burr and labeled him as a dangerous opportunist.
Did you know that the Burr-Hamilton duel was fought at Weehawken, New Jersey? Aaron Burr was then the Vice President of the United States, while Alexander Hamilton was the first and former Secretary of the Treasury. But their long-standing duel first came during the U.S. presidential election in 1800. Burr ran for president under the Democratic-Republican party. Hamilton labeled Burr as “far more dangerous” than Thomas Jefferson (who was Burr’s running mate) who used all his influence so Jefferson could secure his seat in the election.
In the famous duel, Burr fatally shot Hamilton, while the latter fired into a branch above and behind Burr’s head. The demise of Hamilton resulted in the permanent weakening of the Federalist Party.
