Universal, 1925. Carl Laemmle presents Lon Chaney under a mask he designed and applied himself, in the film whose unmasking scene reportedly had audiences fainting in the aisles. The poster sends him out across the underground lake in his boat, and promises a cast of five thousand others.
Adapted from Gaston Leroux, directed by Rupert Julian, and still the version every later Phantom is measured against. For horror fans who know the genre started long before the sound came in.
