The Indiana state flag was adopted on May 11, 1917, and designed by Paul Hadley. Ever since its inception in 1917, the state’s official flag has remained unchanged except for the creation of a law to standardize the production of the flag.

The history of the flag can be traced back to 1916 during the state’s centennial anniversary. The Indiana General Assembly made a resolution that will adopt a state flag. So the General Assembly requested for a contest to design a flag that will serve as the official banner of the state of Indiana. The contest was sponsored by the Indiana Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the winner takes home one hundred dollar cash as a prize. The entry made by Paul Hadley was chosen as the winner of the contest and bagged the cash prize. The design became the state’s official banner in 1917 but the General Assembly made one change to the original design. They added the word Indiana in a crescent shape over the top of the torch.
