The design of the Indian flag is composed of a horizontal rectangular Tiraṅgā (meaning tricolor) of Indian saffron, white, and Indian green, as well as the Ashoka Chakra, a 24-spoke wheel, in navy blue at its center. The top saffron color of the Indian flag represents strength and courage, while the middle band represents peace and truth with Dharma Chakra, and the green one indicates fertility, growth, and auspiciousness of the land.
Did you know that it was Mahatma Gandhi who first proposed a flag to the Indian National Congress in 1921? The flag was designed by an Indian freedom fighter named Pingali Venkayya. In the center of the flag was a traditional spinning wheel that symbolizes Gandhi’s aspiration of making Indians self-reliant by making their own clothing, between a red stripe for Hindus, and a green stripe for Muslims. However, the design was later on modified and replaced red with saffron and included a white stripe in the center to represent other religious communities. The three bands were also later reassigned to their new meanings to avoid sectarian associations with the color scheme: courage and sacrifice, peace and truth, and faith and chivalry.
